Mediterranean Diet is widely considered as a healthy eating pattern, as it helps boost the immune system and prevent us from infections.
The whole world is currently facing the outbreak of coronavirus and people are looking for ways to protect themselves from infection.
According to Dr Jenna Macciochi, an immunologist at the University of Sussex, coronavirus “is a serious infection and no amount of lifestyle intervention will make you invincible”, however - as she added - “there are plenty of small things you can do that may strengthen your immune system”, and one of these is eat Mediterranean.
Researchers widely recognize Mediterranean Diet as a healthy eating pattern and suggest that high adherence to traditional MedDiet is associated with both lower mortality and cardiovascular diseases rates.
Eating a colourful Mediterranean Diet is also a good way to strengthen the immune system, since it helps assimilate a wide variety of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients that are fundamental to fight infections.
According to experts, the common Mediterranean dietary pattern include: abundant consumption of olive oil, fruits, vegetables, cereals (preferably as whole grain), legumes, nuts and seeds, moderate consumption of fish or shellfish, white meat, eggs, and fermented dairy products (cheese and yogurt), as well as relatively small amounts of red meat, processed meats, and foods rich in sugars.
Variety and colour are important factors to boost the immune system. Indeed, as Dr Claire Bailey - author of “Clever Gut and Blood Sugar Diet” - says, the more colourful you eat, the more nutrients you get. Therefore, she suggests: “Have the fruits and vegetables whole and ideally with the skin on as this contains essential fibre that feeds the healthy bugs in your digestive tract, crucial to fighting infection.”
